My Shopping List
I created a budget sheet of items that I would need if I went grocery shopping. I had a 75 dollar limit and this is my list.
While I was creating this budget sheet. I had trouble staying under budget at first. But after I started to find a lot of good deals, I had trouble reaching my budget. Originally, I only spent 45 dollars. However, I looked over my list and made some changes and my total ended up being $72.72. I believe that it is important to create a budget for yourself when you go shopping because then you will know exactly how much you plan on spending. You can save yourself a lot of money this way. Now, I definitely have better understanding of how expensive some foods can be. But I think I’ve learned how to look for good sales. I enjoyed this project because it gave me an idea of what life will be like when I’m in college and living by myself.
Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks
Today, Tyra Banks is known as a former model and fashion legend for young girls around the world. But, Tyra’s life wasn’t always as easy at it is now. Tyra Banks was born in Inglewood, California in 1973. She was a very skinny and beautiful girl from the start. However, as she grew, her mother began to realize just how naturally pretty she actually was. Her mother took some head shots of her and sent them out to local modeling agencies. Although her looks were stunning, Tyra was turned down because there weren’t many African American models in those days. She then enrolled in Loyola University to focus on her studies. However, before she could even take her first class, she was discovered by a modeling agent and taken to Paris to start her modeling career. By the time she turned 20, Tyra was on top of the world. She had become very successful and well-known. However, a fellow African American model named Naomi Campbell did not approve of Tyra’s new-found success. She told a designer to ban Tyra from Chanel runways. Tyra didn’t let this bother her though. She landed a role on the hit television show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She also got a few parts in movies. In 1997, Tyra Banks became the first African American woman to ever be on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. She then began to devote her life to helping young girls realize their beauty both on the outside and the inside. She wrote books and started a club called the T Zone. Throughout the years, Tyra Banks has become a very recognizable fashion model, actress, and talk show host. She has suffered through her ups and downs but she always remembers where she came from. I feel that her positive attitude and her success are very influential. I’ve found that she is not only an inspiration to African American girls, but she is a mentor and role model for girls of all cultures.
Top 6 College Choices
1.) Clarion University of Pennsylvania
When I was taking my CollegeBoard.com College MatchMaker, this university was one of my results. I added it to my list because it specializes in education and teacher’s certification. Teaching is something that I may want to do in the future. This school may not be my first choice, but it’s pretty close to home and I can definitely see myself having a good experience there.
I chose Cornell because, just looking at it’s CollegeBoard profile put me in awe. It is a great school with very high standards. I put it on my list as a goal for myself. It is hard to get into but, if I try my hardest, I think I have a chance of getting in. It also has a very good psychology program which is something I would like to major in.
3.) Drew University
Drew University is a relatively small school. I think that when I go to college, I would like to go to a smaller school so that I can get a better and more thorough education. Drew’s average class size is 20 students. Drew also has a very good psychology program which is what I will look for in schools.
4.) Montclair State University
Montclair State is a very good teaching school. Several people have told me that if I want to be a teacher, MSU is an excellent school to go to. It is literally one town over from my house so I would have to live at home. However, I kept it on my list just in case I decide that I do want to be a teacher.
Columbia is known for being a very good school. It is relatively hard to get into. But I see this as another goal for myself. I would like to see if I have the skills and knowledge to get into a school as good as Columbia. It has some of the things that I am interested in majoring in and it is in New York City which is an area that I would love to explore.
6.) Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
Edinboro looks like a very good school for me. It has the two majors I may want to follow: education and psychology. It also specializes in Elementary education which is what I would like to do. On top of that, it isn’t very far from home and it is relatively small. This is why it is one of my top 6 college choices.
Media Statistics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIFYPQjYhv8
Watching this video gave me chills. It was completely eye-opening but I did not find it very hard to believe. In today’s society, everybody has a Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. It is a very rare occasion when you meet someone who doesn’t have a profile on one of these social networks. But this video made me realize just how many people are actually on these interactive websites. This video’s main point is “Is Social Media a Fad?” Many people have said that this phase of computer junkies will fade out eventually, but this video proves that statement wrong. It says that 96% of generation Y have a social profile. I have to admit, I have become one of the several million who have hopped on the Facebook bandwagon. But who hasn’t?
Current Event: Orange Uh OH!!
The coldest winter in years is not only freezing us from our noses to our toes, but its also threatening the existence one of America’s favorite fruits. Florida, which is usually one of the only states that is not affected by a climate change in the winter, has seen some temperatures in the teens. This very low climate is affecting the growth of citrus plants. Florida is one of the only places in America that can grow citrus fruits because its temperature stays consistent year-round. Temperatures in Miami, which would normally be around 70 degrees at this time of year, barely reached the 40s yesterday. Citrus plants can’t live in temperatures of 20 degrees or less for more than four hours. This sudden drastic drop in temperature could be trouble for the orange juice market. According the the article, “Florida citrus is a $9.3 billion industry. The state produces three-quarters of the United States’ orange crop and 40 percent of the world’s orange juice supply.” So, if these oranges and other citrus fruits fail to live through the brutal winter, the amount of money spent to get the citrus market back on track could cost a lost of money not to mention the time citrus workers would have to work. In conclusion, this potential freeze of the citrus orchards could greatly affect the economy and cause the loss of jobs. Citrus farmers are already working 7 days a week and there is no way that they can work any harder than they already are.
